For the amateurs out there, here’s a simple Windows trick to protect your data and locking your folder/s. There are many desktop apps for locking your folder/s but if you forget the password with which you locked your folder then your data is history! Here’s a simple trick which doesn’t require remembering any passwords but does the same job: Locking access to your folder/s.

Step 1: Blocking access to a specific folder

Required: Two batch files: loc.bat and key.bat

Simply open notepad and copy the following lines of code and save it with .bat extension with save type as ‘All Files’

loc.bat file

ren New Folder New Folder.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}

Replace New Folder with the folder you want to lock. Notice that folder name has to be typed twice.

When you are done the file will look like this:1

key.bat file

ren New Folder.{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} New Folder

Again, replace New Folder with your folder name.

Ready to go! Take both your batch files into the directory where your folder (specified in the batch files) exists and then double click the loc file to lock the folder and refresh once. It will change the folder icon into recycle bin icon as shown. This is how it will look like:

Piku folder’s icon changed into recycle bin icon. Now when anyone clicks the folder it will redirect him to recycle bin. Ingenious!

Double clicking the key file will resolve access to the folder! Simple!

Note : You can delete the loc and key files or make some changes inside the coding when you don't need them or move them to another drive.

Conclusion: No more remembering all the passwords. Your data can now be easily locked and recovered!
