Usually, a person from non-technical background is very skeptical, when it comes to installing software or making a partition of the disk. Most of the computers today come with one hard disk, and that hard disk is usually set up for one partition, that consumes most of the space on the disk. If you are having somewhat identical case with your computer, then either you will have to add a new hard disk for your Linux or the second option is you have to shrink your existing partition to make up space for Linux.

If you have got a new disk and you want to install Linux in it, then the very first thing you need to do is, partition your disk. In this perspective, you should know the kind of disk you are using, that is, either ATA or SATA disk. The command that you can use to create the partition is fdisk. This is how you can do this. Just type: sudo fdisk /dev/hda

ddmain

Whatever be the ID of your disk, you have to make sure to replace hda with the ID. Once you have typed this command, you will be prompted with choices like, by pressing the letter ‘p’ you can print the current partition table or you can delete the partition by pressing the letter‘d’.

You can even delete all the partitions if you want and create a new one. Finally, to create a new partition, press ‘n’ and it will ask you to create a primary or extended partition. You can even create a logical partition, if there is already an extended partition. As a logical partition is possible only on an extended partition, if it is an empty disk, then you will have to create a primary partition. Just press ‘p’ and it will ask you for the partition number. The maximum size you can have is default. That way, you can make a partition your disc to make up space for Linux.
