Microsoft had already announced that it will not be selling Windows XP to OEMs (Originimageal Equipment Manufacturers) after October 22, 2010 which is around 4 months away. Since Windows XP now only comes pre-installed on Netbooks, this means that there will no longer be Windows XP based netbooks in the market after October.

Microsoft has been encouraging netbook manufacturers to switch to Windows 7 but the starter version of Windows 7 would cost around $50 (rumored) per copy which is around $35 (again, rumored) more then what netbook manufacturers currently pay for Windows XP Home edition.

Nevertheless, adoption for Windows 7 based netbooks has been impressive nevertheless, with 81% of the total netbooks sold in April 2010 came with Windows 7 starter pre-installed. Even though the low specs of netbooks do not permit smooth run for Windows 7, the starter version, nevertheless, would be a natural choice once Win XP Home support is discontinued.

Here is a list of videos showing Windows 7 Starter, Professional and Ultimate running on netbooks:

Windows 7 Starter on Samsung netbooks:

Windows 7 Professional on Acer Aspire One D250

Windows 7 Ultimate running on Gateway netbook LT2005u

Even though the last demo showing Windows 7 Ultimate required 2GB of memory but it ran smooth on it and the Windows performance score was specially encouraging standing at 2.1

On the other hand, Microsoft has also announced that support for Windows XP SP2 and below versions will be discontinued so if you have it, it’s time to upgrade to SP3 or else you will not be entitled for any support from MS. (via Mary Jo Foley)
